I still haven’t been able to post from our trip to Egypt last Christmas. We had a lovely time and I took lots of pictures, but I still haven’t been through all the pictures but now I hope to be able to post some of our doings in Egypt.  I hope you’ll enjoy the post even though they are “slightly” late =)

More from our trip to Egypt 2012-2013.

December 28Th

We had discussed going on a pyramid adventure with my Dad. He wanted to visit some of the pyramids that aren’t very well known such as Abu Sir or to go to Fayoom and look at the pyramids in the area.

I can’t tell you how many times we have been to Giza and Saqqara pyramids and how much I love going every single time. It’s an amazing creation and I love walking around and imagining what the pyramids looked like just when they were built, how the people lived and how it was to be an Egyptian in those times. And something that I really hold dear to me is when we graduated and our graduation ceremony was in front of the pyramids. Such an amazing and special experience!

Any ways, after breakfast Andy, Wilderbeast, Dad and I pilled info the car and started our trip towards the Pyramids. But unfortunately this being Egypt we missed our exit from the Ring Road because the sign to turn off was after the turn itself. So we tried going another way and ended up going around the Giza area for about an hour with lots of traffic and two hours after we left Maadi we finally parked at Saqqara and The Step Pyramid or the Dosjor Pyramid.

Having been there lots of times before we know all know what to expect and where to go. Although there are lots of people selling postcards, books, hats and other touristy crap and not go forget the donkey taxi. We’ve been there and done that, about 20 times already so we just ignored them and did our thing. We saw the Ti Tomb pyramid slightly to the right of the Dosjor and about 4 other pyramids in the distance. We took pictures and even recruited my Dad and Wilderbeast to help us find 2 geocaches in the area, one earth cache and one traditional cache. Finding them both was fun, because that meant that we finally managed to take our first Egyptian cache. It was quite annoying because we started geocaching about 4.5 years ago, just after our 2009 trip to Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Bahriya and the Nile Cruise. So se missed out on all of them, but it gives us a reason to come back.

We started driving from Saqqara towards Abu Sir but the road got worse and worse and worse. The speed bumps were the size of small houses and our car was really getting abused. The speed bumps were scraping the underside of the car and we just couldn’t get anywhere properly. So we decided to call it a day and go back home instead. We were all tired from the sun and walking around but I think mostly from the stress of the road.

Back at home my Mom had made Koshari and we LOVE koshari. Koshari is pretty much the national dish of Egypt. It is a combination of cheap foods that are found by everyone, rich or poor. The first layer is a boiled rice and black lentils. The second layer is small macaronis. Then topped with beautifully smooth tomato sauce, fried onions and a lovely sauce called Da’ah, which is vinegar, garlic, cumin and salt.

2013-04-03 Egypten dag 08 12

And for desert beautiful red and plump strawberries.

2013-04-03 Egypten dag 08 13

Then Andy and I got picked up by one of my best friends Maha and her kids Hana and Kenzie in their very cool Jeep Wrangler. We were going to her apartment to hang out there with Maha and my other best friend Mai (also Maha’s sister) and her son Omar as well as Maha’s husband Mohammed. Maha, Mai and I met in Malaysia in 1994 and became best friends straight away. And even though we only see each other once every couple of years it’s just like we’ve never been apart.

2013-04-03 Egypten dag 08 15

We had some amazing Shawarma sandwiches, shredded beef with veggies and Tahina. So good! Yum!

We spent the rest of the evening/night with Maha and Mai and it was really nice. I missed them =) Thanks for a great night girls =)

December 28Th

We woke up today to the sound of birds chirping outside our window. Most might think that Egypt is just desert but here in Maadi it is much greener and serener than other parts of Cairo. Maadi is filled with trees, flowers and gardens and is a really nice place to walk around in.

We had breakfast and just tried to make plans for the day. Andy and I decided to have a day if walking around Maadi and visiting some stores that were on our list from last time. Like Mobacco for clothes of Andy and Maadi Grand Mall for sports equipment, shoes and bags.

2013-04-03 Egypten dag 07 01 2013-04-03 Egypten dag 07 02

To make a long 3 hour walk short we walked around Maadi and I showed Andy some of my old neighborhood. Lots of memories for me that I really wanted to share with my baby.

After the three hours walk we had a quick lunch at Maadi Grand Mall and then we walked home.

I let the camera have a rest and just enjoy my time instead.

We met up my cousin Moe for some chit chat before going together to my Grandmothers house to spend some quality time with the whole family with a great turkey dinner that my Grandmother had prepared. Some of my cousins (I have a few) and my aunts and uncles (I have a few of those too) were there and it was really nice seeing them again. It felt like yesterday that Andy and I were there, but it had been 4 years. And since my cousin Moe had gotten married and we got to meet his wife Mai.

After a great dinner and lots of laughs, lots of laughs! We made our way home to the apartment, bellies filled and hearts full of love. A really lovely day!

December 26Th

It was time to pack it up and go back to Cairo. After a few relaxing days at the Red Sea we’d need the hustle and bustle of a big city. We had breakfast and started to prepare the apartment.

2013-04-03 Egypten dag 06 01

Cleaning and covering furniture and packing for the way home. A few pictures of the apartment to remind us and then a last whiff and a last look at the ocean to remember it and started our 170 km car ride home.

We arrived in Cairo at 10 a.m. and unpacked the car and our bags. We started preparing for the afternoon, my Grandmother and two of my uncles were coming to have dinner with us. One of my uncles lives in Paris, France and is leaving in a day or two so we just wanted to say good bye to him properly.

At lunch time we ordered Pizza Hut and had lunch at home. Just a quick lunch before we tried to rest of the rest of the afternoon. We were really very tired and all of us seemed like we needed to sleep.

2013-04-03 Egypten dag 06 11

Our guests arrived and we had lots of laughs and enjoyed our time.

We had Kofta and Kebab, grilled pieces of meat as well as grilled meat rolls, served with oven roasted potatoes, spring rolls, samosas, kobbe (fried meat and bulgur rolls), babaghanough (an eggplant sauce), Tahina (sesame pasta), pickles, salad and bread. It was a real feast! I love Kofta and Kebab, the grilled flavor is beautiful.

2013-04-03 Egypten dag 06 12

After dinner we had a fruit salad with fresh strawberries, oranges, bananas and pomegranate. So good and such wonderfully tasting fruits. Yum!

And since this is Egypt we also offered the guests sweets in the form basbousa (semolina flour cake), baklawa (nuts rolled in filo dough), and lots of other treats. These are sweet and usually filled with nuts and loved in Egypt. But I don’t eat them because if my nut allergy and also because they are just a bit too sweet for me.

After dinner our guests left and we made it a night, tired but content.

More from our trip to Egypt 2012-2013.

December 25Th

Awakening at the Red Sea isn’t shabby at all, the sound of the ocean in the distance and the sun shining through the blinds.

A well-rested bunch were ready for breakfast and today we had some rice porridge with a cinnamon and sugar sprinkle and milk for those who wanted. I’m not to fond of porridge but my family is and also the tradition of the Almond in the porridge is a must at Our house. The tradition actually began with the one that got the almond in their bowl was to get married in the next year, but our tradition is that the person will be lucky in the upcoming year. A nice tradition to uphold I think.

2013-04-03 Egypten dag 05 01

After a hearty breakfast we played some more games and then Dad, Andy and I went to a small store in the area to check if there were something fun to buy.

The small shop had lots of snacks, candy and the basic necessities that one could need bread, cheese, milk, eggs and so on. Good if one has forgotten something or just want some thing to nibble on.

2013-04-03 Egypten dag 05 02

Back home again we played some more games and had some fun and laughs.

2013-04-03 Egypten dag 05 03

Then we took another trip to a fish restaurant close by to buy some grilled fish that was fished nearby. The restaurant had fresh Boori or Nile mullet. So we ordered and went home with some great smelling fish for dinner. Mom served it with rice, salad, torshi (pickled vegetables) and Tahina (sesame seed pasta). So easy and so amazing!

2013-04-03 Egypten dag 05 07

After lunch Andy and I took a walk on the beach and in the area. We walked along the beach and picked beautiful shells and rocks.

2013-04-03 Egypten dag 05 05

On the way back we checked out the other buildings and went on the roof of our apartment. Such a great view.

2013-04-03 Egypten dag 05 06

Unfortunately it was quite windy today and there were quite a bit if waves that we didn’t really feel like swimming. The suns rays didn’t warm to much either so no sunbathing or swimming today.

Some reading and resting in the afternoon mixed in with the playing of games both board games and those on our phones such as WordOn, Ruzzle and WordFeud and hanging out made a few hours leap by.

2013-04-03 Egypten dag 05 04

We decided to watch a movie, Alex Cross and just cozied together.

After the movie we had some leftovers from the Christmas luncheon for dinner and started a second movie, Johnny English: Reborn.

A quiet and relaxing day with the family, with no musts and just doing what falls into place. A really nice day!

2013-04-03 Egypten dag 05 08

Tomorrow we’ll be going back to Cairo and leaving the incredible Red Sea behind us for this time. I hope we’ll be back soon and then for a longer time, so that we can just relax and have a great time.

More from our trip to Egypt 2012-2013.

December 24Th, 2012

Merry Christmas to you all!

In Sweden we celebrate Christmas on the 24th of December, so today is our first day of Christmas.

Our alarm clock rang at 6 a.m. And we just pilled from bed, to the bathroom, to the kitchen, to the elevator our arms filled with stuff and then into the cars.

2013-04-02 Egypt day 4 01

We started our 170 km trip towards Ain Soukhna and our summer apartment. The sun was rising and a beautiful morning welcomed us.

2013-04-02 Egypt day 4 02

The landscape in Egypt is pretty brilliant. The desert isn’t just sand but also mountains, large mountains. They are such a beautiful sight.

2013-04-02 Egypt day 4 03

After about a two hour trip we had finally arrived. Our apartment is a part of a larger complex but it still isn’t really finished. The grounds around the apartment are still sand and rubble, and the adjoining houses aren’t livable either cause most of them don’t even have walls. But our apartment is ready and waiting for us.

2013-04-02 Egypt day 4 04

Mom has spent lots of time making our apartment fully stocked and a great place to vacation. We have every one could ever need and more.

We unpacked the cars and made our way inside. A place that Andy and I still haven’t been. Mom and Dad bought the apartment about two years ago but we still hadn’t had the opportunity to visit. But now finally we have the time.

The apartment is on the second flour and is a three bedroom and two bathroom apartment. So we each have our own room. Mom has had them prepared to the teeth with everything we need.

Breakfast was on the schedule and we ate it on the balcony overlooking the Red Sea with the sun shining and the warmth in our faces.

2013-04-02 Egypt day 4 05

After breakfast we played some Perudo, a games of dice and then some MIG whilst we let the weather to heat up.

2013-04-02 Egypt day 4 06

The blue of the sea glistened and sang out to us to come for a swim, and we listened. The water wasn’t to cold but still not as warm as we would have liked it to be. But it was pretty much Swedish summer temperature so we don’t really have anything to be complain about.

2013-04-02 Egypt day 4 07

It was Andy’s first time swimming in the Red Sea and also the first time along the western coast. Last time we were in Egypt we visited Cairo, Luxor and Aswan as well as the White Desert so now we are trying to make sure we experience and visit new things and places.

2013-04-02 Egypt day 4 08

The water was really clean and clear with lots of beautiful corals and we spent quite a while in the water and then some time on the beach in the sun. Until we felt all filled up with sun and surf.

A warm and beachy Christmas is quite different from a snowy white Christmas but at the same time very similar to our Christmases growing up in Malaysia and Egypt. So it brought me back to my childhood.

After the swim we showered and got ready for fika with coffee and Andy’s Saffron Buns. Also glögg and gingerbread. Cozy Christmas celebration.

2013-04-02 Egypt day 4 09

Then it was time to start to make dinner. Even though we weren’t at home we were going to make our favorites for Christmas. A Swedish smorgasbord of deliciousness.

2013-04-02 Egypt day 4 10

Moms homemade meatballs, sausages, turkey ham, egg halves  Janssons temptation, boiled eggs, brown beans, omelet  herring and so much more yummy stuff. Also some Aquavit to top it off. A lovely dinner with my family, so nice!

2013-04-02 Egypt day 4 11

After dinner we had some more glögg, ginger bread, and saffron buns. And then it was time to start opening our Christmas presents. Lots of fun and lots of great stuff! Thanks everyone!

2013-04-02 Egypt day 4 12

After dinner we just lit some candles, played games, watching movies and hung out. Just like Christmas is supposed to be. A great Christmas at the Red Sea.

December 23Th, 2012

The migraine was gone and on the schedule today was breakfast with my Grandmother and Uncles. So after getting ready in the morning we pilled in the car and drove to my Grandmothers house.

2013-04-02 Egypt day 3 01 2013-04-02 Egypt day 3 02

We brought with us Foul and Ta’ameya sandwiches and once there we found my third uncle there also. Two of my uncles live in Cairo and the third lives in Paris. So it was a nice coincidence to met him there.

It was a nice reunion with lots of hugs and kisses, after all it had been four and some years.

We ate breakfast and visited with them for a couple of hours, and also my Aunt who came by when she heard that we had come. It was lively seeing them all.

2013-04-02 Egypt day 3 03

A couple hours later we started our way back home, we did have some packing to do for our trip as well as some shopping.

2013-04-02 Egypt day 3 04 2013-04-02 Egypt day 3 05

Returning home we had a rest but then Andy and I took a walk over to Road 9 and bought postcards and some other good to have things. We made sure to visit all of my favorite spots but also have a small bite at our favorite cafe on Road 9, Costa.

2013-04-02 Egypt day 3 06

Unfortunately Costa no longer had the service or the feel of before and it just felt like another chain coffee shop which was really sad.

We ordered a Raspberry Ice Tea, coffee and a chicken wrap to share. The best thing was the raspberry ice tea. To bad our great place no longer delivers.

We decided to try our luck at a cache in the area. Unfortunately luck wasn’t on our side today and we had to go home without the cache.

At home we made sure to pack our clothes and such as well as food, drinks for Christmas and as well as the Christmas presents. Packing took longer than expected so after we were done it was pretty much time for dinner.

My parents had been talking about a Thai-place in their building that had great food so we tried them for dinner. It’s a small place with pretty much 6 seats, so we filled up the joint. The food was wonderful, we ate and laughed for quite a while. Really a great place! Lots of yummy foods and it was nice to have some quality time with my Parents and Wilderbeast.

December 22Th, 2012

Yesterdays adventure in Istanbul was just too good to be true, and a great way of starting our vacation, but it did make us late to Egypt and missing a day of vacation…

2013-04-02 Egypt day 2 01

A two hour trip with food and some sleep felt quick and before we knew it we landed in Cairo around 2 a.m. A quick and easy (knock on wood) pass through Immigration and Customs and we met my parents outside the airport. Finally, it had been a long trip…

We said Goodbye to our new friend Fazee and pilled into the car and drove home. At home we unpacked our luggage from all the Christmas food we had brought and had a chat with my parents before going to bed at around five a.m.

At ten we woke up and started our day of with our favorite Egyptian breakfast, Foul- (boiled broad beans) and Ta’ameya (fried vegetarian patties) sandwiches. Oh, how we had missed them!

2013-04-02 Egypt day 2 02

We spent the rest of the day at home, I had a migraine that was impossible to shake and we were just to tired to do anything at all.

2013-04-02 Egypt day 2 03

For dinner my Mom ordered Egyptian grilled fish, which is so yummy. The fish is charred and blackened but so moist and flavorful. Eaten with rice, red onions in vinegar and salad. Yum!

2013-04-02 Egypt day 2 05

After dinner Andy and I took a walk through our neighborhood, also my old neighborhood were I lived 1999-2001. We walked down Road 9 and made some stops before turning back home to start with some Saffron buns baking.

2013-04-02 Egypt day 2 07

Andy baked and I tried to write lists to remind us of what to bring when going to our summer apartment by the Red Sea to spend Christmas.

2013-04-02 Egypt day 2 06

When the buns were ready, we had some coffee and buns and decided that we’d be going to Ain Soukhna (Red Sea) on the morning of Christmas Eve.

Then we took an early night and tried to catch up on some sleep. Migraine be damned I was going to get better by morning!

More from our trip to Egypt 2012-2013.

December 20th, 2012

It started out as any other day, Adde off to work and me trying to get the last minut tasks done before Christmas. But today wasn’t really like any other day since it was also the day that we were starting our Christmas trip to Egypt to spend time with my parents as well as celebrate Christmas.

2013-04-02 Egypt day 1 01

The last minute tasks as well as the last minute packing seemed to just sort itself out and I just hoped that everything would work itself out. Cause it really haden’t started out in the best of ways.

Yesterday Adde was in Östersund and was to fly back home when the power went out at the airport. Naturally I got somewhat worried if we’d actually make it on our vacation. But he did get home and we did finnish packing and all was well with the world.

The problems they came later…

We picked up Wilderbeast on the way to the airport and all was well. But at check-in we were informed that our flightvwas delayed about an hour. Fine, we couldn’t do much about that but we did realize that it might cause a problem in Istanbul since our layover was just an hour and fourty five minutes…

2013-04-02 Egypt day 1 02

By chance Adde’d Dad returned to the airport at that time and we met up for a quick chat and some catching up before he made his way to his hotel and we continued chilling in the soft chairs, not!

We made our way to some comfy chairs and took it all in stride. Just to wait for take off and that’s when we should have realized that it was going to be a very long trip…
